There are 10990 legs.
7 girls x 7 backpacks each= 49
49 backpacks in all x 7 cats in each backpack= 343
343 big cats x 7 little cats for each big cat= 2401
2401 little cats + 343 big cats=2744
2744 cats x 4 legs each= 10976 legs
7 girls x 2 legs each= 14 legs
10976 + 14= 10990 legs in all (there is no driver, if you read the details)

There are 56 cats in the bus, which means 224 animal legs. There are 7 girls and assuming a bus driver - 8 humans, there fore 16 human legs. 16 + 224 equals 240 total. The answer is 240 legs are in the bus.

10990
7 girls = 14 legs
each backpack has 56 cats in it
that's 392 cats X 7 X 4 = 10976
10976 + 14 = 10990
okay. + 2 for the bus driver, but you didn't say he was on the bus.

1582 if all the girls are on the bus have the 7 mama cats in each backpack with 49 kittens. No boys, teachers, driver or tripod cats?
A lot of variables to meet but... if all those cats are on the bus, I don't want to ride!!

Who knows? Each girl has a backpack, but is the backpack on the bus with them? Each backpack has 7 big cats and for every big cat there are 7 little cats, however, that does not mean that the little cats are with the big cats. Heck, we don't even know if all of the girls and cats have all of their legs. Plus, are the girls on there alone or is there a driver in there with them. Not mentioned but can be safely assumed to be there.
This is just a stupid question that is trying to act like a riddle. It is full of holes and incomplete descriptions. It would be even more idiotic if it is relying on the difference between "riding on" and "riding in". "Riding on a bus" is perfect acceptable vernacular which means being a passenger on a bus. It does not mean (in normal useage) that the people are actually on top of the bus.
