energy is equal to mass times the speed of light squared

energy equals mass times the speed of light squared.

It has several meanings.

1)the basic idea is that matter and energy are interchangeable, at a constant rate of exchange. So that you can turn a small amount of matter into a large amount of eregy, and (theoretically) vice versa.

2)the energy contained in the atoms of an object is determined by the mass of the object times the speed of light squared (which is a very high number). This explains why a nuclear reaction is so powerful.

3)the energy required to accelerate something up to the speed of light is truly ridiculous, and it takes more and more and more energy if you consider larger and more massive objects. This isn't as easy to see in the equation, but trust me, the math shows it.

Energy = mass timesXspeed of light squared. If you ever want to feel really dumb, get Einstein's book which proves how this formula is true. Holy crud. It's a small novel. I tried reading the book, but it was a total waste on me. I took trig and analytic geometry, but this math was a whole different league.

It's Albert Einstein's theory of relativity.

Basically, the equation states that matter and energy are identical. If you could convert a small amount of matter completely, it would yield a tremendous amount of energy. Let's use gasoline as an example. If we burned 3 kilograms of gasoline (about 1.05 US Gallons or 3.97 liters), it would yield 140,000,000 Joules, which is a tremendous amount of energy. However, the burning of gasoline only produces a chemical change.
Now let's calculate converting those 3 kilograms of gasoline completely into energy. Finally, we will use the legendary

E=mc²
