Its more a fame thing. Same as all those that got busted for drunk driving.
With fame come two things, one for the suspect and one against.
For: they have money, power, and backing that other people don't have. They can find more ways to go around the system or deflect some of the punishment.
Against: They don't get to have a real fair trial. Their supposed actions are paraded throughout the media in a way that makes it very hard for there to be an unbiased jury. People get all worked up and fairness seems to get thrown away.
EDIT
Wait! Are people actually thinking he got it worse because of his race?
23 months is a little under two years, that's less than those stated above!

Is his sentence based more on race than on crime comitted? Probably, but then again I think that most are too much for animal fighting.
I think that because he admitted to personally holding a dogs head underwater and drowing the animal and hanging one and electrocuting another dog, with all those then yes he needs to spend time in jail, BUT, if someone was to fight animals for fun or for profit and they determine that the animal is unfit for fighting or breeding and or adoption then they should euthanize the animal, the humane society does it with a clear conscious so why not let the dog animal fighters do the same.
Also I would like to add that, speaking as someone who has fought animals in the past (Louisiana still has legal cockfighting) that no matter what anyone will ever say to you, no matter what kind of "proof" people try to show you, there is NO way for anyone to force a animal to fight if it does not want to fight, PERIOD!!!!
All the cockfights and dog fights I have witnessed, all fights were over as soon as the other animal quit fighting on his own.

The sentence would need to be comparable to other's that have been convicted of the same crime; the man takes responsibility for his actions, and when his time is completed--his sentence should end.

No, it's cuz he's a famous football player and he's rich. I don't agree with 23 months...he should spend 4-5 yrs in prison. I hate him for what he did. I don't support ppl who do that to dogs, esp. pitbulls.

Not being a sports fan, I had no idea of whether or not Vick was black or purple. I was appalled at the cruelty of this 'sport'. Its illegal, they didn't make it illegal just for blacks.
He could, Lord knows, pay for excellent legal advice, so why am I supposed to feel sorry for someone who did what he did?
And 23 months is one month less than two years (24 months).
His also eligible for parole which could considerably shorten his time.
Racism...no...responsibility....yes!

Not a matter of race; rather economics. The more money the better the defense. The better the defense, the lighter the sentence.

Everything is racist. I stubbed my toe last night, and that was racist. Racist, racist, racist!
Every case is handled on its own merit. I see nothing racist about this sentence.
By the way, do you know the definition of the word "racist?"
It refers to the belief in the superiority of one race over another. Given this, how could a criminal sentence be racist?
Get over the racist crap, or the problem will never go away!

He did turn in a guilty plea, which from what I understand can result in a lighter sentence.

It is excessive.
His sentence should have consisted of a very large fine ($5 million or so, to go directly to the ASPCA) and 30 days.
