You can see how popular fighting has made the NHL - an NBC broadcast of the finals a couple of years ago was the lowest-rated primetime show ever on one of the big three networks.
Basketball doesn't need to change anything right now, except to promote more scoring through some easy rules changes.

I think it would be interesting to see what would happen. The main problem, however, is that for those fights NHL players get a lot of games off. The NBA can't give such penalties, so the punishment would never seem right.
However, it would be fun to see some NBA fights.

We have the UFC and MMA for all that. The NBA needs to find a way to put a better product on the court and they can start by reducing the number of teams in the league, way too many.

grappling & wrestling with pads (& sometimes gloves on) on ice is a lot different than a bare fist fight on solid ground.
cool? how about ppl would get seriously injured.
rudy tomjanovich almost died from a punch, before they cut down on fighting.
