Let me be more specific. I heard that there is a theme in this movie to "kill God." Not that anyone can do that, it just I do not want to support that kind of idea. Is this true?
I also saw on the website the you can create your own da(e)mon, and every character in the movie has one? What is up with that?

The reason many people are electing not to watch the movie is because it is based on books written by an athiest. It resembles the Chronicles of Narnia, but books have an anti-religious theme and the children in the book eventually "kill" God. The author has been quoted to say his intention is to kill the idea of God in the new generation.
It is my understanding that the movie is watered down enough that some audiences will not understand the anti-religious themes and will go out and buy the series of books for their children to read.

I seen it yesterday its really good!! There is a really good fight secne with the polar bears. It was a great and I am excited enought now to want to read the books and see the next movie!
In my opinion its very FANTASY and all all kinds neat elements to it! If you like fantasy go see it dont just listen to others opinions because not everyone likes the same thing so of course some will have bad reviews about it while others love it depends on what you like!!!
Add on:
In this movie they do not kill god. This is a triology in the third book is what people are saying they kill god. The Golden compass movie does not show that, or reference that. I have heard that they do NOT Kill god and that I guess the person who dies at the end was swept away in the wind because he was so old and it was said that he was an imposter. The books it self might say more but the movie is deffiantly made for a movie I did not notice any religous refferences or anything ofending during the movie. I Have not read the books but seen the movie and it was good for a movie but Im sure the book probly goes into alot more details about what they skimed over in the movie. But it was not theartening.
About the damons since this is based on fantasy and fiction and an alternate world the damons them selves are not bad they are like peter pans shadow, they are your soul but they are worn on the outside in the form of an animal that is always with you. if you are hurt ur soul is hurt, if your soul is hurt you are hurt. I thought it was really neat.

THere is no reason to NOT see it. There is a big push from several religions to ask people to not see it because it is about a girl who tries to stop a god from doing harm (I'm keeping it vague to not ruin the plot). They keep labeling it as an "Atheist" movie, funny... atheists don't believe in gods...
Any way, they just do not like the way the god in the movie is portrayed and that the writer of the movie is an atheist. However, look at the previews of the movie and you will see that there are plenty of scenes in the movie that do not go along with atheist thinking, so it is NOT a movie to "convert" people into being atheists, it is a fantasy movie about a little girl finding personal internal power that is able to take on and battle the evil around her. Great movie for teens if anything! I would guess the main issue the religions are having is that it is showing people that thinking for yourself and taking on personal responsibility is much more powerful and fulfilling than following the masses and not challenging what you are told. Hmmmm...

I think you should see it because it's a decent movie, but I'll give you some strong reasons why you shouldn't
the movie is okay, but not good or anything higher. the dialogue is okay, but occasionally become disjointed and the flow gets choppy. Also, the characters are all very one dimensional. No depth is really given to any of the characters. The golden compass is too much of a deus ex machina; she basically just opens the damn thing and *poof* problem solved, she has the answer. There's no excitement to her use of it. The scene progression is okay, but parts of the film seemed rushed, and thus they became trite, or meaningless to the viewer.
I'd still see the movie if I were you. I enjoyed it, but this was mainly because of the special effects and action scenes.

Philip Pullman is the author of "The Golden Compass", one of a trilogy called "His Dark Materials". He's a self-proclaimed atheist and his books are seen as anti-religious. I've read them and see them more as "anti organized religion" not specifically atheist. Here's a quote from Time magazine:
"I wouldn't want to be a part of any movement that had an agenda," Pullman told the magazine. "I'm not arguing a case. I'm not preaching a sermon. I'm not giving a lecture. I'm telling a story. Any position I take is that of a storyteller who says, 'Once upon a time, this happened.'"
It's a story and a very good one at that. The books have been out since 1995 and sold very well. Do we now have a nation of little brainwashed atheists? No. Did reading the Harry Potter books turn children into Wiccans or Satanists? No.
I'm taking my daughter to see it, maybe even twice, just out of sheer contrariness. I think this is all very silly.

"It is racist and talks about killing God in it. When I saw it I got so mad about the killing God thing"
Hah. To the person who said that, you are so full of crap. You obviously didn't even see the movie.
Anyway, no, no one kills god or any god-like figure in this movie. The main characters kill a false god in the third book in the series, in order to escape the oppressive regime he (and especially his underling, Metatron) have placed on their world (in other words, they're trying to gain free will by getting rid of an angel who pretended to be god).
The only reason to not see this movie is if you don't like fantasy movies or if you just don't want to see it because the reviews aren't great.

You should NOT see this movie if you're willing to let "the magesterium" dictate your entertainment choices. That's what it's all about...controlling ideas.
You should NOT see this movie if you just don't care for fantasy. If you hated Harry Potter...Star Wars....Lord of the Rings....Watership Down...then fantasy isn't your thing.
You should NOT see this movie if you are afraid of polar bears.
You should NOT see this movie if you never see a movie that's based on a book.
However, I don't think any of those are valid reasons. We'll be seeing it. I'm reading the book to my seven year old right now...already read it myself. It's fiction..it's entertaining, and if you aren't looking for a deep guiding influence from a work of fantasy, you'll enjoy it.

one it is really sad how many people want to see this, they have no idea the whole purpose behind it is to destroy God in your mind. And what is even more sad, is that when people go to see it, they still don't realize that. That was the purpose of the movie, and books, to destroy and kill God. The movie and books alike were meant to be advertized as Narnia books but really they are the complete oposite. If you have a religion you should not support this film, because its purpose it to get people, especially children, to kill God in their minds and to get them to stop believing in religion. Now it is sad how people don't know this and deny it. Well sorry to burst you bubble but what we Catholics, Christians, and many other religions are trying to is simply not allow something so ful. And even if you dont believe in anything don't you think it is wrong that someone could be so cold and try to get people to ?! Well if more and more children learned to how would everyone cooperate. And yes one film can unfortunately change that, that is why we must say no this is not right. And NOT SUPPORT THE GOLDEN COMPASS!!!

Ive heard a lot about it, somthing about killing God in the end, however the writer said it has nothing whatsoever to do with religion and she isnt killing God. I think there is a lot of hipe over one single movie, I personaly dont think it looks that good, but some people really liked it.

I hear it is really good.
When the book came out, I was doing volunteer work reading all the new books at the local school libraries prior to their being put out on the shelves. There is nothing wrong with it.
You should go see it, if for no other reason than the to counter the book-burning mind-set of the cretins who are attacking it out of their usual vicious ignorance.
