Well it's not a democracy of course and everyone knows that democracy is the only correct form of government (sarcasm leaking out of my ***).
The Dali Lama did ask for help however, as are the people of Myanmar. The Buddhist marches represent the majority who are against the dictatorship. Although I joked about the democracy thing because that was our ridiculous excuse for Iraq, the people there seem to want change.
I have never been a fan of the Bush administration, but I am glad that someone is taking notice of the country, even if it is for stupid reasons. In politics it always is.
Myanmar situation is tragic, but there are worse things going on that we should note. Africa, particularly the DRC and Uganda is a mess when it comes to human rights violations. We won't touch them. They don't have as many resources as places we are interested in. Thus your theory makes sense. Our government only seems to be interested in places that will help our progress. It's ambitious and tragic, but it is also true that we can't get involved in every battle. It is sad that we only attend to places that could provide resources instead of global respect however.

Myanmar (Burma) has very little oil. It does not even rank on the top 20 nation for oil reserves. That kind of blows your theory.

Myanmar's oil reserves are 696 million barrels. That is very very small compared to the nations like Iraq, Iran, and other nations on the top 20 list.

Or what about closer to home? Sadly, the further away these "celebrities" go, the more media exposure they get. Nobody cares what is happening next door, or down the street or in the next town. They spend energy, money and oil products to get far away, making appearances for the camera, and then back home to the glory awaiting them. One good deed does not a nice person make...that is a daily way of life for those who truly care.

If I were Ms Bush married to George I'd be looking for an affair too.
You know damn well she doesn't give a rip about the indigenous people of this country.
