The LGBT community is very accepting of just about everyone. If you are open-minded about things, you will fit in great. About half of the residents are straight upwardly mobile professionals or retirees.
You are just minutes from Downtown, Balboa Park, and Mission Valley. There are lots of really great restaurants, the Landmark Theaters are a great art film venue, and the shopping is great. I would say it is the best place to live in San Diego for anyone.
The two biggest drawbacks are that it is very expensive too rent or buy in, and the traffic can be a real pain at times.

Not at all! I'm straight and have lived in Hillcrest; there's a lot to like about living there. Lots of nice restaurants, a great art house cinema, close to Balboa Park and downtown, close to two large medical centers and close to major freeways. I find that gays and lesbians there are very welcoming to straight people that are friendly to them, much as members of any group. After all, they live and work with straight people all the time. I honestly don't think that gays or lesbians are that different than me; just people you either like or hate or are indifferent about, just like any other. If you felt nervous around gays or lesbians I'd guess you might feel differently.

It is a gay area but they don't bite anymore. It is a very nice, clean, and interesting area. Great food and the folks that live there are very nice and respectful for the most part. There is an issue there with meth but a lot of areas om San Diego have the same problem.

Hillcrest is a nice, clean section of San Diego. It's a pretty nice place to live and if you ever have to be in a hospital UCSD Medical Center is great

If Hillcrest is in simple terms too high priced then Encinitas/Solana coastline are way out of your variety. There are some outstanding small and previous apartments in Bankers Hill which you need and can have the money for. additionally, college Heights has been doing a splash redeveloping these days and is turning out to be to be an somewhat outstanding place to stay. you will like it. a great number of cool shops and low shops stepping into. sturdy success.
