WWI was July 28, 1914 to June 28, 1918. It was considered the most horrible war in history because everyone got a taste of the horrible machines we (every one) made to kill other people. WWII was better, but poorly planned and carried out with Allies in Europe and the Pacific Ocean.

You already have the text book answer, but our revolutionary war was a world war, also. Britain fought against uprisings in many of her colonies, and that's one reason why we won. Their strengths were divided.
