I just found out I'm pregnant. My husband is delighted, and I am too, BUT there's one problem. I've put on about 25 extra pounds since we got married that I wanted to lose before we had children. I know the average expectant mother should gain extra weight. (obviously). I'm just wondering if it would be okay to try and tone up / drop some excess fat during the first trimester. I want what's best for my baby, and if it means packing on an extra 30 pounds to my 25 I needed to lose, then that's fine! (It would be nice to avoid becoming a blimp post-baby though!)

You should always check with your doctor, but I feel like you shouldn't try to diet when pregnant. Eating for two is a myth. With both my pregnancies I gained less than 15 lbs. Just be sure to eat healthy and get lots of FOLIC acid and Omega-3. If you are feeling extra hungry, choose a healthy snack higher in fiber so that it fills you up. Don't add any new work out to your routine, but it's OK to continue anything you were already doing that your body is used to. Walking is a great way to start and will be beneficial when it comes to the laboring process. Being fit makes it easier. A BIG CONGRATS to you and good luck.

Well obviously your weight will go up & down during your pregnancy. Some women lose quite a few pounds the first trimester (or even longer) because of being so sick. But really you should just talk to your doctor about it. Personally, I'm well overweight so my doctor said that if I didn't gain any weight during the pregnancy she wouldn't be upset (although didn't ask me to lose any...exercise during pregnancy is limited you can also ask about that). She was very specific about what foods I should eat and we are watching my blood pressure and everything. I was actually doing good and gaining "less than 'normal'" up until Thanksgiving when all of a sudden I gained 10 pounds in 2 weeks! Then she put me on a low-sodium diet and now 2 weeks since then I lost 5 pounds of that 10 so it's like I only gained 5 never that 10 (kind of confusing sorry). So just watch what you eat very carefully and do lots of walking and some exercising (just make sure your heart rate doesn't get over 140) and if you're taking the same road I am, worry about the weight after the baby's born. We'll be running around & crazy busy afterwards so hopefully the weight will melt off!!!

It's absolutely not safe to diet while you're pregnant. I lost a few pounds in my first two months, but it was because I was still losing weight from my first baby, so the doctor wasn't worried about it. But you should never ever TRY to lose weight during pregnancy, your baby needs all the nutrition it can get!
As for exercising, that's fine, but doctors recommend that you don't exercise more than you did before you got pregnant.

I was 138lbs pre-pregnancy weight lost 5 lbs in 1st trimester due to nausea & vomiting. I put on a total of 18lbs ( Ihad minimal appetite the whole pregnancy) and gave birth to a healthy 8 lb baby. Some may lose much more weight than that, consult with your MD if it's excessive, they will monitoring weight gaun regulary anyway.

Edited: Sorry didn't read question thouroly. Yes you can definenly excerise while pregnant. There are many videos and books on good routines while your pregnant. Always check with your MD first. If you havn't benn working out prior to pregnancy you will have to start slow.

Every pregnancy is different so every answer will be different. You shouldn't restrict your food intake, however every doctor will tell you to get excersise as long as you have a normal pregnancy. That can be as simple as walking!

With my first pregnancy (5 yrs ago) I was overweight and told to gain between 10-15 pounds, I thought she was NUTS, however I did gained 15 not that I was "dieting" or even working out, however I had enough reserve for the baby. He weighed 8 pounds so I pretty much left weighing what I did before I got pregnant! NICE!!!

My 2nd pregnancy (3 yrs ago) I gained 55... please mind you I wasn't as over weight, I had lost about 20 pounds, and I was carrying TWINS! who weighed 7.6 and 6.7, but when the doctor told me I would gain about 50 pounds again I thought she was NUTS! Because my first I only gained 15! Looking back I don't think I over ate, although I did eat what I wanted, but it also took me 2 years to lose that weight, which was very depressing!

Now, I am 19 weeks, with my final baby! :o) I have gained 5 pounds and every time I go to the doctor he asks me if I am eating! Yes I am eating, however I have also been sick! I also think God is being really nice to me since I had such a hard time losing it from my twins! :o)

Talk with your doctor, tell him/her your feelings. Honestly 25 pounds really isn't that much extra weight. In the US most of us are 20-25 pounds over what we should be! He/She will recommend what is needed to have a healthy baby! Follow that and you both will be fine! Because honestly, my 55 pounds with my twins was nothing! I was so lucky they were healthy I would anyday take the weight lose for healthy babies!

Good luck! :o)

It is safe to exercise and eat healthy while you are pregnant. It is unsafe to exercise and eat healthy to lose weight while you are pregnant. If you are anything like me, you will have less of an appetite during your first trimester which will result in losing a few pounds. Doctors understand that women will lose some weight during pregnancy due to hormones, loss of appetite, vomiting, etc. If you try to lose weight on purpose while you are pregnant, this could be bad for your baby.

I would not actively diet. In general it's not safe, but pregnant women are supposed to burn twice as many calories as non-pregnant women. Also since we are trying to eat healthier some women find they lose a little weight at first by accident, just because they are making better food choices. Good luck to you. Remember, just concentrate on making sure the baby is getting enough nutrition, your body will adjust accordingly.

Dont gain any weight while you're pregnant, or try not to. If you're careful and eat the right amount of calories (plus 300 for baby), stay active, and keep in touch with your doctor, you can exchange the weight for baby weight.

Talk with your doctor about it. They dont want you to lose weight, and you dont want to exercise more than you did before you were pregnant, but not gaining weight in your case is probably an option.

it's not safe to diet while pregnant. But you can work out and if you do it right, you may be able to maintain your weight during pregnancy. Most docs expect women who are overweight to gain only about 5-10lbs during pregnancy.

Continue working out on a regimine that is recomended by your doctor and talk to a nutritionist or dietician to find out what would be a healthy balanced diet that will encourage weight management during pregnancy.

No, you should not intentionally try to lose weight while pregnant. It's going to have to wait until afterwards. Stick to a healthy diet, and you'll know baby's getting good nutrition.
