Try to use more CFL lighting and use more of more economical means of transport.
Keep a budget for a month limiting use of gasoline and oils(Petrol and Diesel respectively)......
Use the trains to travel to work if they've got the service in their city..
Do not waste electricity, try to use as little amount of electricity possible, switch electrical appliances when not in use.
Try to plant trees, even one per head will help in a long way...
Try to avoid de-forestation in lieu of widening roads and developing the land for building flats and houses........
Impose a mandatory law that makes each citizen to plant a sapling in his locality.That will make the people more responsible and also the earth greener......
And ban hunting and poaching of any animal..........Animals found aplenty 2day may be of the endangered species 2morrow.....
Use water to the necessary amount, do not let water leakages and do not use water for unnecessary purposes in huge quantities.......
And most of all, ban SUVs........

Create awareness among the people you inter-act.This can be practised by joining a like minded Pressure Group .As an individual, you can discuss this matter with friends and persons you are close with , but, the real effect is likely to be very less.
Joining as a member in an NGO also will allow you to be much more effective .

Virtually nothing - only collective, legislated and legally enforceable actions will make a difference. All the other bumf about individually restraining your "footprint" means nothing - the all-powerful forces of economics will ensure that your efforts get negated.
The only exception I can think of is if your are a hot-shot scientist who discovers, say, a source of unlimited clean energy, or a way of reducing green-house gases biochemically...
