I'll be 12 weeks tomorrow w/ baby #1. I have been very constipated. The last time I had a bowel movement, I strained a lot, and then there were about 5 drops of blood! It hurts, but i'm mostly just concerned and want to make sure everything is ok. What can I do to lessen constipation? I just need some reassurance that i'm ok, it only happens when I have a bm. Thanks

I had the same problem. Stool softners like Colace will help. Also the fiber and water.

Welcome to the wonders of pregnancy.U have hemorrhoids from straining to have a BM.Check with ur OB but try OTC Colace and metamucil. Also drink loads of water. And for the times that it hurts after a BM use Tucks wipes. This not only helps to shrink the hemorrhoids but will help with the pain also. Had the same problem with both my babes, freaked me out to and im a nurse! Congrats and good luck by the way.

YOu're giving yourself hemmeroids from straining so much. Stop pushing.

Pregnant women need about twice as much fiber as usual. You can get it from benefiber. Just sprinkle a mess of it on your cereal in the morning. You can also stop taking your prenatal and take a flinstons instead. It has all you need in it- the folic acid you needed in the beginning, and you get enough from fortified cereals now. Iron in the prenatal will stop you right up.

Drink a lot of water. And I mean a lot.

constipation doesnt get better as pregnancy goes on, it gets worse, and these two things are key. Take this advice and you'll survive. I actually went into labor from trying to poop. DONT STOP USING BENEFIBER. You can put it on anything.

Also, get some phillips capsules, not laxatives, but the fiber suppliments, those are safe when pregnant. Instead of trying to MAKE yourself poop take a few of those before bed. It'll work out in the morning.

That's normal...it means your poor rear end just had some mini-tears. Most likely from hemorroids.

Eat lots of fruits and fibre, up your water intake...walk everywhere you can (that does get things moving).

I am only ever constipated in pregnancy...it sucks. I feel for ya!

That much blood for that length of time means you need to get yourself to the ER. Right now. Not tomorrow, not the next day, but right now. You could have a bowel disease, you could have cancer, or something in there could have been damaged or torn. Either way, you need to see a doctor. That much bleeding is extremely serious.

eat more fiber and drink more water to ease constipation. the blood is likely from a hemmoroid, which are caused by too muck pushing.

Hemorrhoids. Ouch. Drink lots of water and eat lots of fiber. Even that may not help but at least you will be trying.

My prenatal pills made me constipated. To much iron. Talk with your ob/gyn about constipation and they should be able to help.
