If you use portable media, make sure you use the correct type.
For example, if your dvr has a DVD+R drive, it will not recognize DVD-R or DVD-RW discs.
If the media is correct, then there may be a problem with the drive.

Sounds like the hard drive in your DVR is broken. If it came from the store that way, exchange it. Otherwise call the manufacturer and see about getting it fixed.
