As individuals, we have a hard wired survival insitinct as do most other creatures on this planet. As a race however, it seems that we are different from most species in that we don't have the same amount of commitment to species survival. We are also unaware of the negative impacts we have on all the others species, and even when we are aware, we arrogantly suppose that because we have the "gift" of rational thought, we have more right to survive than they do. In my honest opinion - and I am not trying to a pessimist, just realist - I think we have become parasitic, and abuse our position at the top of the food chain. I believe that as a result of this, the Earth - being an organism itself - will rid itself of us in order that it may survive. And personally, I am not so arrogant to think that my life is more important than the lives of the thousands of species that go extinct every year, and would willingly give my life, if necessary, for the survival of this planet.

They don't 'need' to. They 'will' until they can not. The idea of need appears only in the realm of thought. There really is only do or do not. You do find food or you do not find food. You do fall down and become compost or you do not.
