Hiya, Im doing my georgraphy and I have to say why we need coastal defences, I know that it is to protect the coast, but I cant just write that so, why else are coastal defences needed?

So tidal waves don't crash into land and cliffs.
If a cliff is being constantly hit with strong currents, it will begin eroding, this is bad because there could be houses on the cliffs, roads, or the cliff may start to erode so much that metres of it fall into the sea. ( 30+ years. )

The Coast Gard's motto is " So Others May Live " The men and women who work for the Coast Guard risk their lives everyday . Rescue swimmers are on the job 24 hours a day. They swim in waves the sizes of houses , just to save lives . Most loose their own lives trying to save others .The Coast Guard was at Katerina working all day with no breaks .The Coast Guard has lead the attack on D-Day . They were part of the Vietnam War and is now part of Iraq . The Coast Guard is part of the Department of Homeland Security . The Coast Guard has been serving America since 1790 .

The above answers point out two different meanings of the word defence. One is the attempt to prevent erosion of the land, and the other is to repel or delay invasion by sea. I suspect from your spelling that you are from the UK, which has been invaded countless times in its history. The last attempt (by Nazi Germany) was just barely repelled.

Just type in US coast guard and look up what they do for jobs, it should give you a good idea as to why.

it to prevent the erosion of the land at the beach to the impact of the constant wave against it
that why there is many sand at the beach due to impact of the wave which are timeless and endless process
