When you bring a PC to get fixed or whatever, do techs snoop through your hard drive? Look at your pictures? Check out your movies and games? Look for bootlegs? Would you get in trouble for having bootlegged games and music on a hard drive when you bring it in?

They do, and they talk about you to others. But you dont have to worry about them turning you in, because they are breaking the law as well. It is an invasion of your privacy for them to look at your files without express permission. If they turned you in for pirated stuff, you could turn around and sue them for everything they've got. They might still risk it if you have something truly horrible, like kiddy porn, but not for bootlegs.

Far more likely, you're reputation will be ruined because they will tell everyone what dirty pictures you have.

I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The best PC cleaner and antivirus program is PC Health Boost, it's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate.

It's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than nomal. Download it here for free: http://www.pcboostsoftware.com

No we don't snoop, unless we cannot diagnosis the issue directly and need to locate where a corrupted or malicious file is located. Games and music no, Porn maybe (parental request), if your operating system needs to be reinstalled and is bootleg, your on your own. If your that disturbed back up your information to an external drive, prior to bringing it in.

They will look though your hard drive to find out what the problem with your computer is you wouldn't get in trouble for having bootlegs on your computer they wouldn't know if they are or not you would get in trouble for having images or videos of child porn on your computer there is one well known case of this in the uk where ex 70's glam rock singer Gary Glitter took a computer for repair to a branch of PC world (or another well known computer repair center) and child porn was found on it and he got in to a deal of trouble over it

I fix computers and I find things all the time that I don't want to see. Its not that I am looking for it, but sometimes it takes real detective work to find a persons problem. I have never reported anyone for having something illegal on their computer. If I did I'd be reporting half the computers and I'd be out of business

It probably depends on the shop itself. If they're busy then I can't see why they would have time to snoop. If they're professional then they wont for the moral and possibly legal reasons behind it - data privacy acts etc.

Additionally, consider this: What would they gain from getting you into trouble? You're obviously a customer of theirs and aren't going to pay them if they get you into trouble, and it would do nothing for their reputation if people found out they were getting their customers arrested!

Yes techies look, mainly to enhance their own library by poaching tunes others have, saves you having to download.

As for games, music etc, they can't report you. I am a computer engineer, and mainly I just get on with the job, however if you are at someones machine that seems like a sleaze balls, I would check it. If i come across a machine that looks overly clean, then I check, your window washers don't clean everything..lol

Remember porn and music are legal, unless you are looking at child porn, and for that you should be in jail anyway.

Gawd that's a scary thought - I swear to you I wondered the very same thing the other day (kowinkidink). I look forward to the answer here, and hating to be negative, my bet is that they DO peek.

I have nothing to hide - legal wise - but I keep personal docs in there. From time-to-time, I move most things to a memory stick, and have yet needed to take my baby out to repair.

I think that once they have done their numerous scans and whatnot, and one of the scans brought up an error or a virus or something in one of those folders, yeah, they would look in the folders to get rid of the problem. I don't think they would go looking in all of your folders and files just for the heck of it. To be on the safe side, I would get rid of all of the pirated stuff before sending in your computer.

nope I worked at a repair shop we never went through anyones PC unless it was called for i.e. backing up files or the entire disk

there was this one time when this guy had alot of kiddy porn but we only assumed that due to the names that was flashing across as it was saving to the new hard drive so unless you going to get your hard drive backed up they shouldn't be going through your machines
