Assassination is a sudden, usually unexpected act of murder committed for impersonal reasons, typically with a political or military leader as its target. Although assassination gained its name from that of a fanatical Near Eastern sect in the Middle Ages, the practice of assassination goes back to ancient times, and extends to the present day. At one time, the most widely used tool for assassination was a knife or dagger, whereas modern assassinations more often use guns or bombs, while poisons have long been a means of political killing.

"...to murder (a prominent person) by surprise attack, as for political reasons."

Originally, an assassin was a member of a Muslim group, headed by the Old Man of the Mountain, who targeted and killed leaders of other Muslim sects. The traditional etymology of the word is that it's related to "hashhish," which the leader supposedly gave his men to get them fired up to commit their killings--which were usually (or at least often) suicidal.Today an "assassin" is anyone who kills or tries to kill a prominent person*--not necessarily for hire. Although John Wilkes Booth was part of a conspiracy and it's still uncertain whether or not Lee Oswald was, the man who shot James Garfield and the one who tried to shoot Andrew Jackson pretty definitely acted alone.

*"Assassination" has been defined as "the murder of a VIP."

The name "assassin" is commonly believed to be a mutation of the Arabic "haššāšīn" (حشّاشين) or Hashish-eater. It is suggested by some writers that assassin simply means 'followers of Al-Hassan' (or Hassan-i-Sabah, the Sheikh of Alamut . Others suggest that since hashish-eaters were generally ostracized in the Middle Ages the word "Hashshashin" had become a common synonym for "outlaws"

1531 (in Anglo-L. from c.1237), via Fr. and It., from Arabic hashishiyyin "hashish-users," pl. of hashishiyy, from hashish (q.v.). A fanatical Ismaili Muslim sect of the time of the Crusades, under leadership of the "Old Man of the Mountains" (translates Arabic shaik-al-jibal, name applied to Hasan ibu-al-Sabbah), with a reputation for murdering opposing leaders after intoxicating themselves by eating hashish. The pl. suffix -in was mistaken in Europe for part of the word (cf. Bedouin).
