With a very few minor oddities, the electron configuration corresponds perfectly with an elements position on the periodic table. The row an element is in corresponds to the outer shell of electrons that is being filled. The column of an element corresponds to the subshell in which the last electron is placed. The first two columns correspond to outer s electrons, the transition metals correspond to outer d electrons, the last 6 columns correspond to outer p electrons, and the lanthanides and actinides correspond to f electrons.
