I was wondering if there really was a difference between 0 gauge and O27. Because I have a 6 year old Lionel trainset that is O27 gauge and I wanted to buy the Lionel Polar Express trainset, however will i be able to use my old train tracks and stock on the new track and stock and vise versa?

027 track is spaced at the same width as regular 0 gauge track, but is slightly shorter in height and has thinner rails than traditional 0 gauge track. A shim underneath the 027 track enables the use of 0 and O27 track together.

The 027 name comes from the size of the track's curves. A circle made of eight pieces of standard curved 0 gauge track will have a 31 inch (787 mm) diameter. A circle made of 8 pieces of curved 027 track is smaller, with a 27 inch (686 mm) diameter. Full-sized 0 cars sometimes have difficulty negotiating the tighter curves of an 027 layout. Although the smaller, tin lithographed cars by American Flyer, Marx, and others predate the formal 027 standard, they are also often called 027 because they also operate flawlessly on 027 track.

0-27 Gauge Track forms a 27" circle.
0- Gauge Track forms a 30" circle.
Its really not recommended to combine the gauges, but you can.The pins used to hold the track together are smaller in diameter for 0-27 & larger for 0 Gauge. The 2 tracks really do not fit well together. Leave the 0-27 track for the under the tree display. Use the 0 Gauge for the permanent layout, track is cheap enough (used) & cleans up easily as long as its not bent or really rusty. Track Lockons (power) fit both gauges.

The scale for both is 1:48. The "27" as in O-27 refers to the radius of the track in inches.
