We don't have to. But more and more we choose to -- or rather, accept from those in charge that we are under some moral obligation to do so. For some reason, their human rights are referred to loudly and stridently, while ours are eroded more and more. We are in the position of people tip-toeing around in our homes not to disturb the neighbours, while those same neighbours make as much noise as they like. Who, for example, started all this nonsense about people from non-Christian cultures being offended by any overt celebration of Christmas? I have never met anyone who takes it amiss and people of all persuasions enjoy the idea of a celebration and some time off work. What is not realised by all these worthy do-gooders is that we win no respect by sacrificing our customs and lifestyle. We are simply seen as weak and foolish and people become more and more insistent in their demands. Even local authorities construct housing suitable for the tastes and lifestyles of immigrants rather than making it clear that this is the way we build our houses and that if they don't like it, then they should spare a thought for the accommodation they occupied before they decided to seek a better and more generous life elsewhere.
Meanwhile, when we choose to go to their countries, we are obliged to fit in with their way of life. If I chose to go to Saudi Arabia, for example, I would not even be allowed to carry my Bible with me. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/12/19/ubible119.xml One of many good reasons for not going. But surely, if foreigners coming to the UK are so offended by our customs, they too could opt not to come in the first place?

Actually "we" do not.
The people coming to "our" country do not expect that we shall fit around them, and neither do they expect us to.
The circumstance that you describe is called Political Correctness, and it is created entirely by armchair socialists and those in public office, who ought to know better.
Unfortunately it is all part of the "dumbing down" of the culture.
Simple courtesy would be better, though, as it is mutual.
I think that PC is an indication that the inmates are running the asylum.

let them practice their own customs and you practice yours. if you have a problem with them just stay away from them. the problem is so many people go out of their way to be jerks to immigrants, for example when they're speaking another language among themselves and people say "this is america speak english". they don't have to speak english among themselves, why do you feel uncomfortable not understanding people's private conversations? they don't listen to yours.
