As the above poster rightly said Phobias can be aquired through the need for survival, and for objects that threaten that survival. For example monkey studies show they can be much easily conditoned to fear a snake than a flower, showing they display 'Fear-relevant' conditioning. Its practical in the wild to be afraid of a snake as it can be a threat, so some fears may be aquired as evolutionary valuable.
We also can aquire them through our genentics, some studies have shown phobias such as agoraphobia can interact with certain pernality types such as neuroticism and so as these have faint genetic links we may be handed down the 'tools' as such to make us much more vulnerable to certain phobias.
Also we aquire them through classical conditoning, For example with a rat(Little albert study showed that children could be conditioned to fear a rat when they made a scary sound when it was presented) much in the same way as a child you fell into water and nearly drowned you may associated water = drowning. We then maintain these phobias through oprant conditioning - avpiding the phobia causes our fears to reduce and we reinforce avoiding the object all together.
Finally freud beleived that Phobias result from the fear associated with Id impulses being transferred intoan object, and then avoiding this object stops repressed conflict (For example he used a case study 'Little hans' He was afrais of horses, freud generalised he was afriad of black hair around their mouths, like his dads moustache - was scared of dad! I wouldnt put to much weight into this theory though as its very disputed and biased.)

Hope that Helps!

The term Phobia is mainly used to describe irrational fear. The source of this irrational fear or phobia is your subconscious mind.

All types of phobias can be easily treated and eliminated if you know the root cause behind a specific type of phobia. For instance, when i was in school, i used to be scared of the dark and then i learnt that somebody had mistakenly locked me in a dark basement when i was a small kid. As i learned about this root cause, my phobia went away immediately. With right techniques, reprogramming your subconscious mind is an easy and effective way to get rid of any type of phobia.

Monkeys in captivity that have never seen a snake mostly react with fear when they see one for the first time... so SOME phobias are rooted in genetics to aid in our survival.

Others are learned.. but still as a survival trait... dog bites a little kid... the kid fears the dog (so as to not get bit again.. survival)

guy gets bit by a spider... fears spiders when older.. again so as to not get bit again.

Now.. there are also less practical phobias... like say fear of clapping or stepping on cracks and that sort of thing. I don't really know what "origin" those could have other than maybe anxiety.
