Chinese history like Egypt's history is divided into dynasties. The first historic dynasty was the Shang Dynasty. The earlier Hsia dynasty was mythical. The Chinese believed that the Emperor ruled with the "mandate of heaven". Each dynasty was splendid for a period of time and produced great culture. When it declined for internal or external reasons, the Chinese believed that it "lost the mandate of heaven". Then it was replaced by another dynasty.
