would like to know is there such a thing as a 1 day liquor license?

Temporary liquor licenses can be granted. I don't know the rules, but there are special events that serve alcohol all the time. It may be more difficult to get a license for hard liquor than for beer and wine.

I know Pennsylvania has a state liquor control agency. Is there a similar thing in NJ?

I think it is only for special events. Like carnivals or shows.
