OK, so I was talking with my cousin on the phone the other night and I heard her soon-to-be-husband saying something in the background behind her and then she said to me "oh, 'sam' (her soon to be hubby) wants you to know that his mother just LOVES you". I didn't know what to say since I've only met this woman 3 or 4 times in my life. I said "um haha, tell him I love his mom too(she really is a very sweet old lady)" and she did. Today she informs me that she is annoyed because his mom doesn't like her very much and she apparently "loves" me and she's kinda been taking it out on me since then. I don't know what to say. Did I say something wrong? Why is she acting like this? She declined my dinner invitation and has been very short with me. why did he say that?

You didn't do anything wrong. Sounds like your cousin has a problem with being envious of you and how the mom feels about you. Keep on being yourself--you can't help it if people like you better. Don't worry about this--go on with your life and let your cousin figure it out.

your cousin is a jerk, it's her issue to deal with. You did nothing wrong.

He probably said that because his mother mentioned in passing that she liked you. It was nothing serious and was meant as a compliment.

You sound like you are close to your cousin. Give her a call and tell her you really want to clear the air about this. Let her know that if you were dating her fiancee, that his mother probably wouldn't think you were all that great. The woman may be seeing the cousin as someone who is taking her son away from her or she may be one of these people for whom no one is going to be good enough for her child and she's not going to like anyone her son is with.

Tell your sister that of course his mom "loves" you! You've only met her two or three times, so she barely knows you, and you're not "taking her baby boy away from her." (Which is a common feeling from mothers when their children are about to get married. She knows she's not going to be as important in her son's life once he has a family of his own.)

If your sister isn't mature enough to realize what's going on, then she's going to have way more problems with her m-i-l in the future.

I dont know if you have one, but dealing with a future mother in law who dosent like you is NOT FUN. Feel her pain, tell her that your sorry about whats going on with the situation. And make sure to talk about your cousin constantly, when your are around the mother in law. Pretend its like a job interview and just tell her all the great things about her. All I can tell you is to just talk to your cousin, her situation sucks right now, and she is just jealous of yours, its not your fault, just let her blow off the steam

Using drama in life is an old trick . Just accept it for what it is.

It's not your fault, you didn't do anything wrong. It's sad that she's probably jealous because she isn't liked as much. She'll get over it... Sometimes older people are picky and hard to please, so it probably isn't too personal and maybe you can tell her that.

there was probably a spout at the house that you are unaware of, avoid the situation with the mother if you want to keep peace
