My imaginary friend doesn't keep his skidoo in my yard and let me drive the snot out it.
I prefer real friends.

Here's my poem to answer your question.
"Portrait of a Friendship"
At her home
She urges
feel at home
put your feet up
I refuse
Commentary – never bend boundaries
At the café
She says
if you were a man
I would marry you
that doesn’t mean we’re lesbians
Commentary – It means you always want your own way
At intermission
I’m racing back to her
Left alone
Her angel soul floating in the crowd
straw blonde hair weaving
a disoriented, disembodied, dispersed spirit
a lost doll out of her doll’s house
Commentary – Fragile may break if left alone
Danger lurks if left alone
In my dream
She’s setting the Shabbat table
I can stay until her family arrives
Commentary –Not invited, only a friend, I leave
At the shop
She points out topaz earrings she wants
Already I’m plotting to buy them for her
After I give this gift
For a time, it’s me
she wants to please
For a time, it’s me
who made her happy
Commentary – for a time
a very short time
that evaporates
that’s ephemeral
that’s illusion
What’s the next thing to do, to buy
to regain entry
to the magic circle of her warmth
to replay that song of illusion
to partake in the feast of happiness,
the romance of fun and adventure
She loves me
She loves me not
She loves herself, not me
She loves her family, not me
Commentary – Friendship is a useful commodity
open and closed as needed

The problem with imaginary friends is you can't just walk away from them. It can be a pain in the a**...especially when they're saying a bunch of cr*p you'd rather not hear. Like 'Are you sure you want to wear that?' or "When's the last time you vacuumed?' Geesh!

I prefer stuffed animals.
You can talk to them about anything, beat them up when your mad, and hug them when you need a hug.
And they will always be there.
