Because you're wise and sensible - despite their cheerful and harmless "Happy Feet" appearance, penguins are sneaky, sinister and vicious animals, justly feared by all their neighbors (predator and prey alike) both for their brutal nature and their periodic mass outbreaks during which they sweep across the face of the Earth attempting to establish another 'Penguintopia' in which all life on Earth is subject to the cruel whims of the penguin overlords.

Wow, that's a pretty odd phobia.
I don't imagine it's all that hard to avoid encounters with penguins, though - unless you live in the Antarctic or something.
Perhaps you had some sort of childhood trauma involving a short, fat man in a tuxedo, and the visage of a penguin now triggers panic and fear in you.
I myself am afraid of ventriloquist dummies. They give me the shuddering heebie jibblies. I have no idea why. They're just freaking creepy.

You might have had a bad experience when you were younger, alot of people are afraid of different things with out no reason at all some people are afraid of Kittens, mustard and pickles.
So Being a afraid of penguins is no big deal compared to some people's odd phobia's. im sure if you have a nice encounter with a penguin at maybe an aqaurium you wouldnt be afraid of them anymore they are cute gentle creatures.
I have an odd water phobia, oceans, lakes and ponds totally freak me out.
