Heating your home burns fossil fuels
Leaving any appliance on standby wastes energy
Having the thermostat up too high
Leaving the water running when you are brushing your teeth
Not using energy efficient lightbulbs
Having your washing machine working at a high temperature
Heating rooms that aren't being used

Take your pick but there's a whole lot more ways we kill this planet in the home!

1) Using the airconditioner. It releases gases which will combine with the atmosphere to form another type of gas. The product of that reaction doesnt matter. But the fact that it is reacting with the atmosphere which consist of three oxygen molecules causes the depletion of the atmosphere. Thus, infrared ray and ultraviolet ray which penetrated the atmosphere will be absorbed by the earth's surface. This causes global warming.

2) Switching on lights while asleep. Some people switch on their porch lights when they sleep and some even the bedroom lights. This causes a wastage of energy. Energy produced will be wasted and will take up more energy which causes pollution.

3) Using light bulbs which consumes a lot of power. This uses up more energy. People should switch to more efficient light bulbs which means less energy is loss to heat. A more efficient light bulb can produce a brighter light as well as reduce heat released. The explanantion is similar to the one above.

4) Wasting paper. For example, students who do their homework at home, often do work neatly. Meaning lots of spacing in their book. It may look neat but it wastes paper. It means more trees must be cut down to produce sufficient amount of paper for the same amount of paperwork. Thus, students should do their work systematically by leaving lesser space and writing smaller as well as write on both side of the page unless restricted.

5) Leaving electronic devices switched on when not using. Some people wait downloads to complete and by doing that, they just leave it on even while they're asleep. Instead they should let it download when they're using the computer. Multitasking. Also, some people, let their radio play 24 hours a day. Sometimes when they're asleep they also let it play. This wastes energy and the explanation is similar to the mentioned above.

extra:
6) Disposal of wastes. Some people do not sort their wastes accordingly for recycling and reusing. Used bottles can be kept and reused as many other things. And if they don't want to use them, they can always recycle it. But some families do not practice this. They just jumble everything they do not want and dump it in the waste. At the disposal centre, there are people who sort them out separately, but these rubbish will be on conveyor belts and moving non-stop. Surely, being human, they would miss out on some materials that can be recycled or is still brand new! So, when these material are disposed. More of it needs to be produced to cater for the needs of the world. So, more energy. And once again, the same explanation.

"There is enough in the world for everyone's needs, but there is not enough for everyone's greed."

Teachers who constantly push ridiculous levels of envirmonmentalism in the classroom. Everyone needs to take reasonable care with our natural resources. But some teachers just can't get off the same old broken record. They need to give it a rest!

1. not recycling
2. leaving unused appliances/electronics plugged in (drains electricity)
3. using paper towels/napkins instead of cloth towels (adds to trash)
4. using lawn chemicals
5. being wasteful with constant cosmetic updates to home (adds to trash)

I'll give you a few more:
6. wasting water on long showers
7. leaving unused lights on
8. using disposable paper plates, cups, utensils instead of resusable dinnerware
9. appliances that waste energy/water (not energy star approved, such as toilets, washing machines, dishwashers, etc.)
10. using regular light bulbs instead of fluorescent
11. setting thermostat unnecessarily high or leaving it high while out of house
12. using toxic chemicals to clean the house instead of safer ones such as vinegar, baking soda, etc.
13. using toxic materials in home such as vertical blinds (emit toxic chemicals into air, pollutes house air; carpets do the same)
14. improperly insulated home (includes drafty windows, doors, etc.)
15. having too much of a grass lawn wastes water, have to cut the grass (more waste/pollution), and of course chemicals used to treat lawn
16. use of pesticides
17. use of wood that is not quick to replace (bamboo and some other woods are quick to grow and replace)
18. not using low-flow showerheads/faucets
