Let's say you were face-to-face with a cold-blooded murderer who if free would continue to kill. You have a choice: secure his life from death at someone's hand, or secure his death to someone else. His life is in your hands so to speak.

If you secure his life, he will likely kill more innocent people. If you secure his death, his death may or may not bear weight on your conscience.

I'd probably go for the second choice because I would be saving lives at the cost of one. It would be difficult to deal with in the future, but I think I could do it.

I would definitely choose to end the murderer's life. I am a firm believer in the death penalty. If this person is going to continue to kill innocent people why would one even consider letting him live. He is a burden on the community and should not be kept alive to burden anyone else's life. A lifetime prison sentence puts this man at the burden of the tax payers. If it were up to me I would say let him die and it would not affect my sleep because now he can no longer harm people.

If the risk is hypothetical (he's a modern day Jack the Ripper but nobody is at immediate risk), I apprehend him at gunpoint.

If the risk is imminent (he's currently attacking someone), I take him out.

Why would he go free?
I would probably do what you would do.
