Wild guess...

You used a store-bought XP disk, OR one from another PC, right? I am assuming you have a legal version.

IF your PC came with Recovery disks, you must use them, that's where all the drivers are. RTFM.

IF your PC didn't come with Recovery disks, you have to install all motherboard, video and other hardware drivers first.

You are not alone. I installed XP, and my computer is trying to crash. It will not allow for any real virus cleaner to be downloaded. I plan to take mine to have fixed on Wednesday. I do not want to take too long because I never know when it will fully crash. If you can afford it, do not allow a buddy to fix it. All of my computer wiz buddies did not do me any justice.

You do not mention two very important things.
When reinstalling windows it is necessary to reinstall all the drivers for the best versions(usually the latest). Was that done?.
It is also required to do windows update (there are loads even after SP2). Was that done?.
The machine cannot become reliable again until these tasks are completed.

Sounds strange! Did you also install SP2? And get all the many Windows updates before installing other programs?

It sounds like a RAM shortage. That or there in a short in the Motherboard somewhere, but the random crash at no particular time or point sound like RAM.
