painting furniture?

Question

so i had an old coffee table i decided to "re-finish" i sanded it down filled in bad spots and painted black. Only thing is it doesn't look too, hot too many brush strokes and streaks
(i used oil based semi gloss)
can i go over this with spray paint?? will it cover everything up???

I did the same thing about a month ago. I used Rustoleum High gloss black paint with synthetic bristle brushes and it turned out great. I did have to put about 4-5 coats of paint on it though. It took me bout two weeks for each coat to dry and to re-coat. If you are going to spray paint it, I would try to get the same brand and color. I put a coat of spray paint on mine first as a base color so I don't know if it will work after. I would try to put a couple more coats on it before you try to spray paint it. Hope this helps.

Certainly you can paint many coats. One issue is something you might consider.

Think of a SAW, blade up. Paint/brush strokes are similar to that surface. Paint will flow over the entire surface but even minute depressions won't strictly FILL up; to become a flat, smooth surface initially. As the build up occurs in the depressions; it also occurs on the "high" spots.

If it was my table; and aesthetics were at all a part of the plan; I'd probably fine grit sand the current finish; spray prime, and spray finish coats. I also wouldn't use oil based semi gloss; but that's totally a personal opinion.

I suppose it also depends on the style you are going for. If you want a sleek, clean, new look, go with what the first guy said. As for me, all my stuff is antique. When I want to paint something black, I want it to look as if it's been there a while, so I actually sand it down AFTER to give it that worn look. If THAT is the look that you are going for, spray paint will work fine.

If they are both oil based then you can put more coats on it and it should do fine.
