Cat's answer is sufficient, but let me clear one other thing up. Tropical fish are NOT, NOT salt water, they are fresh warm water fish.

Goldfish will live a shortened lifespan when kept in warm waters, plus you run in to other problems. Goldfish are extremely messy fish so they are going to foul up your tank very quickly......and it happens even faster when they are in warm water.

I would suggest that you research all you can on both tropicals (warm water) and goldfish (coldwater) fish, as the more info you have, the better off you'll be. As I always say, "knowledge is power", and the more you have the better fish tank you will have.

I commend you for asking the question because it is apparent that you are unsure. Many people would just "do" as opposed to checking it out first, so you are on the right track. Just keep going and find out all you can!!

I will also add that Goldfish, believe it or not, are NOT beginner fish. They require a great deal of specific care (i.e. filtration type, tank maintenance, tank SIZE, water temps, food, etc.). They really are not easy to care for if you are a beginner. Your best bet would be to either START with tropicals (after reading about them), and get used to having/raising fish, THEN move to goldfish. All fish require care, but tropicals (platys, mollies, guppy's, swordtails, tetras, are all easy firt time fish) are a little easier as beginner fish.

Good luck to you, having fish is SO MUCH FUN!!! ;o)

The popular answer is no but I have a 55 gal goldfish tank that has 6 tetras living in it and they get along fine. I keep the goldfish tank at about 70 to 72 degrees and so far no problems.

Some of the livebearers don't mind the lower temperatures and actually live longer that way. I wouldn't mix them in a small tank but the larger set ups with good filtration seems to work fine.

Just as personal experience I would not mix goldfish with tropical fish. The number one reason is gold fish are cold water fish and tropical fish require warmer water.

No its not ok.
Gold fish are cold water fish and very messy . they need to be kept with other cold water fish in large tanks and even biger filter systems.
Puting a gold fish in with tropical fish is a time bomb waiting to happen.

Im not sure were everyone got the idea that tropical fish are salt water but there not.
tropical = fresh water
marin = salt water.

no. goldfish are coldwater fish, keeping them at tropical temperatures will not only harm the goldfish and shorten his lifespan as his metabolism speeds up, this will also cause him to poop more, and this, goldfish being very messy fish, can cause an ammonia spike, which will kill off more delicate tropical fish.

not only that, but goldfish will grow large enough to eat smaller fish such as neon tetras. and will nip at fish with long fins such as bettas.

no. goldfish like cooler water (60°-68°F). tropical FRESHWATER fish like warmer water (72°-80°F). they also have differing dietary guidelines.

also, goldfish create massive amounts of ammonia in their waste, so if you do keep them, make sure you're housing them adequately. (around 1" of fish to 5 gallons of water) and performing frequent partial water changes (and making sure the water is declorinated). good luck!

If your tropical fish are in fresh water...absolutely. In fact the goldfish often like it, as its a nice warm environment and gives them a bit of energy to swim around. Just check whether the tropical fish are aggressive as some of them tend to bite at the goldfish tails.

Just no. Lots of reasons,but just NO.

not exactly because the tropical fish are salt water and the goldfish is fresh water so you may end up killing your pet.
