There are various different linux systems. Ubuntu, debian, google chrome. Linux is open source meaning that the source code is published and anyone can modify it to make their own version of an operating system. It used to be just for super geeks although it's getting a bit more mainstream nowadays especially since google built their chrome OS on linux. The best thing about linux is that it is super fast or more accurately Windows is super slow and rubbish so Linux seems super fast by comparison. I mean Win XP takes about 5 minutes to start up, what on earth is it doing?

As a recent Linux convert i can confirm that:

1) It's free and if you go for Ubuntu it's easy to use.

2) Pretty much a community project where there are bags of people willign to help. Really i have been blown away to the support i have had for this and all for free and all by people who have been in the same boat as you.

You literally control the whole of the machine and layout of the desktop. It's more secure than Windows and in my opinion better.

In all but gaming Windows has the edge . If your into your games you can either dual boot with Windows (very easy to do) or use WINE which will help.

But do it go for it! All these people that say it is dificult it really isn't and the benefits are well worth it!

Good luck

You really have to look into the different distro's and find out. What are you looking for in an operating system? All linux distros allow for a high degree of customisation, that and the fact that it crashes less than Windows and is free and has tons of free, high quality software, and the list goes on.
I use Ubuntu. It's not to difficult to use or administer but it still has a hig degree of customisability.

With every copy of a Linux distro you also get a free membership in a cult religion.

Face towards the North, bow down and pray to the new deity, Linus ;-)
