My wife is demanding a new dish washer but the one we have is less than 7 years old.
The problem is that it doesn't clean very well ( and my wife claims it just throws the food around ). When we have a cup that collects the water it usually will have a lot of grit in it that resembles sand. It also leaves a pretty hefty haze on everything. We have tried different soaps, different settings and additives. I usually run the garbage disposal and the hot water prior to running a load.
Other issues we have is that our water softener does not work but we have city water (with a water treatment plant in our city) and we don't have much water pressure on our hot water.
I just want to make sure it is the dishwasher and not something else or that the hose is clogged.
I have a lot of young children who like to be right in the middle of any project I do so my wife has to take them away and I would prefer to not waste time chasing theories. Does anyone have a suggestion?

We have tried the vinegar. We have tried just about everything that has been given as a suggestion in the magazines.

Here is a site that explains step by step the diswasher & how each part works and suggestions. http://www.apwagner.com/appliancerepaircenter/Dishwashers.htm
OK, Have you broken any glass in your dishwasher in the last couple of months?
It could be that the water is not being drained all the way out during the wash and rinse cycles leaving particles in the dishwasher.
Is the water draining all the way out? You should not be able to see any water in the bottom of your dishwasher.
Also try using those all-in-one pack detergents.
Put less dishes and spread them out better.
Or you could just buy her a new one for CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Run a quart of vinegar through an empty cycle every couple weeks. It will clean it & it will smell good too. Mine does the same thing and it helps...try that before you spend a lot of money.
You can also run vinegar through the coffee pot to clean it too!!!!
Actually vinegar is a miracle! Here is a list of things vinegar is used for on around the house!!!

When you say there is grit (sand) present and you have low pressure on the hot water side, it sounds like you have problems with your water heater. Water pressure should be the same either hot or cold if your water heater has a lot of sediment in it it can cut down on the amount of water coming out reducing the pressure. When the washer uses the hot, (most of the time) the jets won't blast the dishes clean and the jets themselves maybe partially clogged because of the grit you mentioned. you need to check the water both in and out of your heater because if that's the problem then a new dishwasher will eventually clog up to. Plus if you have a lot of sediment in your heater it will burn out soon to. You say you have a water softener that doesn't work. If it doesn't work and your not going to fix it remove it. It's probably clogged up. The water treatment plant doesn't treat for hard water (which is why you have/had a water softener in line) all they treat for is bacteria and test for chemicals like pesticides. Your problem is probably both on the input water to the washer and the washer it's self. You can take the jets out of the washing machine and clean them with something like "lime away or CLR" but if your input water has sediment in it they will clog up again. So will a new washer.

I would check the filter is cleaned first and make sure that you are using salt and rinse aid in the proper locations on the dishwasher. I do not recommend these all in one tablets as I find cheap dishwashers work just as well and that the machine works far better having the salt and rinse aid added. Another problem could be that there is a build up of Limescale. Use a limescale remover and consult a plumber concerning the water pressure. Always rinse of any food before putting plates etc in the dishwasheras this could have clogged up your filter. Hope this is of help to you.

Seven years is pretty long time youy had the dish-washer. Better get a new Dish washer and live happily.
As for low pressure and o9ther complaint with watwer, the best way is to contact the water treatment cell. They help whole-heartedly.

I would take out the drain in the bottom of the dishwasher and clean out the bottom. Run it through a few times without anything in it. It sound like you just have debree in it. Btw my dishwasher makes its own pressure and its own hot water.

Do you clean the filter? Very important. Many people don't, and wonder why the dishes aren't clean.

Do you scrape off the plates very well, and rinse them when necessary? This is also very important.
