the earth is heated by the sun ... yes BUT the sun does not heat the atmosphere that much it actually heats the ground with solar radiation, the radiation is not heat itself, but its when a mass absorbs the radiation that temperature is created

Because the atmosphere is not heated directly by the incident short-wave solar radiation but by the reflected long-wave radiation from the earth's surface.As the atmosphere is thus heated from below, the temperature gets lower as you go up particularly in the troposphere.
