Its like classical, they think its all opera, but nobody objects to listening to the star wars theme. Rap is liked or hated (due to its increasing popularity and bad press), pure and simply theyre talented to be able to rap loads of words a minute and them all rhyme, theres got to be some genius in that. Rock music, its not just a bunch of shouting roaring men in eyeliner, there are some bands who actually sing and dont copy other bands' styles, play guitars beautifully. Dance isnt just music blasting out of cars of boy racers, anything that gets you up on the dancefloor is considered dance so think about that next time.
Surely I like to fight for my favourite style being the best (rock) but if you can make a song that people enjoy and everyone's tastes are different, theres something for everyone.

Good question! I too wonder this at times because my music selection ranges from Classic Rock to Classical. I appreciate talent! I think the reason why people don't "appreciate good music" or a wide variety of music is for 2 reasons... 1. Immaturity. A lot of people tend to like what's popular and to go against popular belief isn't "cool." 2. People identify with a certain genre and that becomes part of them. When someone doesn't agree with another's music choice it's almost an insult to that person. For example, I'm from the south where country music is prevalent. Growing up your immersed in that culture and tend to identify with that music. Rap, R&B, Heavy Metal just isn't the norm. It's not what speaks to the people...So someone comes along and says they don't like country music and it's almost offensive. Shouldn't be but that's the way it is....I suppose.

Because some people are ignorant and believe that their opinion is more valid than anothers. For example, I personally dislike the music of Queen. That's just my personal taste, it don't mean they are rubbish. They must have something to be able to sell millions of albums and have so many fans, if I personally don't like their music it's no reason for anybody to lose sleep over it.

I feel very sorry for people that have such a narrow viewpoint of music. I like a lot of classical, though not all. I like a lot of heavy rock though not all. I like popular music, jazz both modern and traditional and in small doses I like reggae. I can turn on a radio and listen to almost any music that comes along. I have an MP3 player with hundreds of tracks on it set to the shuffle mode and I get a broad spectrum of entertainment from it.
Have a happy and blessed Christmas.

You actually make a good point. People tend to think that their music taste is best because they like to think they know alot. I have 6/7 different kinds of music taste. No music genre is better than the other just different. I wouldn't say that the beatles genre (oldies) is better than calvin harris (techno) but that they are different. Calvin Harris gets me dancing and The Beatles is what I got to for good lyrics and great use of music instruments. So whenever people say that one music genre is better, just say 'no, it is different'

I can appreciate other people like different music to me but that doesn't mean I want to listen it to! We are all individuals and are entitled to our own opinions, however wild or strange others think they are! If we were all the same, life would be very boring.

It's not that we don't appreciate other genres, but the new stuff gets shoved down our throats.
It's all about who's buying the music and who's buying the clothes they wear and who's pitching what with that song.
I say make an album of art, and stop decaying the place with tainted money music.

cover versions are less valid than original material
anything manufactured is less valid eg. pop idol, x-factor, any "celebrity"
novelty music eg. cheeky girls, crazy frog is less valid
now my personal hate is r&b but it doesn't fall into the above categories so i have to say it's as valid as other genres but those macho criminal rappers make my flesh crawl and my stomach wretch.
