Classical Period - violins, violas, cellos, double basses, piccolos, flutes, clarinets, bassoons. trumpets, trombones, french horns, percussion (drums, tympani, piano, organ

Early Romantic - which would include Beethoven - he is not a 'late romantic' as above, plus cor anglais, tubas

Late Romantic - as above, with wider range of percussion - xylophones, wood blocks etc. Saxophone invented mid-19th century and is used by a few composers. More specialist intstruments such as 'Wagner tubas' used by composers such as Bruckner. Orchestras become bigger, using more instruments, e.g. quadruple woodwind

Modern music. All the above, but as a reaction agaist the enormous orchestras demanded by e.g. Mahler and Richard Strauss, intrumentation becomes leaner.
