Are you using PRE-CUT "Stringers"?
In any case I often take a measurement at the point where the first Rise will be located; Vertically measure UP to where the top of the stair will be; floor or otherwise; and divide to determine number of rise and tread. 8 inches is pretty standard.
If this is an enclosed staircase; I'd probably go with pre-cut stringers; as I have often.
Steven Wolf
I forget the name; but a great book describing every detail is "The Blue Book". PLUS one can purchase a multi use triangle square for the purpose.

Put the tape where you want the foot of the stairs, run it up to the top .Easy. The hard part is the you have to work out how many treads.

rise and run, you want a maximum rise per step of 8,you could do 7.5,if you go 7.5 or 8 (inches) on a scale of 11 in. up 12 in out to give you a 90deg. and step it down for each step, you have to know the height first. e mail me with the height and i can figure it out and then e mail you back
