And then, there are also rewards, right? If you punish yourself, then, to be fair, you should also reward yourself. We all punish ourselves whether we know it or not. It is done on a subconscious level, that level which sees it all, from which nothing is hidden. But punishment is meant to improve. To remember never to do that mistake again! And in this endeavor, there is so much self-esteem! So much pride! Nowadays, people want everything easy, and punishment is 'punished', banished. So, self-induced punishment seems bordering craziness. But it is not. It is self-discipline pushed to an extreme and people are afraid of extremes. It is a strong struggle against self-complacency, and a war against mediocrity and stagnation. Even a priest would not recommend such thing! Your question is a trick question. I wonder what you expect from us.
