y=mx+b
m= -1/2
y= -1/2 x +b
plug (3,4)

4=-3/2 +b
b= 4+3/2 =11/2

so
y= -(1/2)x +11/2

2y = -x +11

Equation of a line
Point = (3, 4) ==> (x, y)
Gradient = -1/2
Gradient is the same as slope

Standard formula

y = mx + c
where m = slope ; c = y-intercept

Solve for c

y = mx + c

4 = -1/2 (3) + c
4 = -3/2 + c
4 + 3/2 = c
8/2 + 3/2 = c
11/2 = c
c = 11/2

Equation

y = -1/2x + 11/2

It IS realy easy man start with \ Solve for c

y = mx + c

4 = -1/2 (3) + c
4 = -3/2 + c
4 + 3/2 = c
8/2 + 3/2 = c
11/2 = c
c = 11/2

the equation is:

y = -1/2x + 11/2

y=mx + b
m= -1/2
(x,y) = (3,4)
plug and solve for b
4 = (-1/2)(3)+b
4 + (3/2) = b
b= (8/2) + (3/2) = 11/2
y= -1/2x + 11/2

2007-12-10 00:22:29 · answer #4 · answered by Roger L 2 · 0 1

y - 4 = (-1/2) (x - 3)
y = (-1/2)x + 3/2 + 4
y = (-1/2)x + 11/2
OR
2y = - x + 11
x + 2y = 11

A full and complete question, individualized and asked by a thinking human being, one who has considered the question intently and knows what confuses them, who seeks to understand a concept?

Or perhaps a mindless, verbatim quote from a homework assignment, asked by someone who doesn't want to try, who seeks a patsy to do their work for them?

(a,b)=(3,4)

y-b=m(x-a)
y-4=-1/2(x-3)
y-4=-1/2x+3/2
y=-1/2x+3/2+8/2
y=-1/2x+11/2
