I am 22 y/o and for the most part, I have a normal period that lasts 5-7 days, and occurs about every 3 weeks. My period started on Nov. 23 (which was around the normal time), but instead of stopping after 5-6 days, it hasn't slowed down much at all. I'm now on day 17 (Dec. 10).

Earlier today it seemed to slow down enough so that I didn't have to worry about wearing any sanitary pads or anything, but just now (after laying down for bed and trying to sleep for an hour), I realized that the flow picked up again. Before today, it hadn't slowed at all (this was the first time).

It hasn't been super heavy the whole time, but just a regular constant flow I guess. I haven't done anything different from what I've always done, I'm not on the pill, and I also am NOT feeling any of the other side effects that I normally get when menstrating (cramps, bloating, etc.)....

I have an appointment to see the doctor in a little over a week, but does anyone have any idea what's wrong??? Thanks

I also wanted to add that I'm not on ay medication or anything, either. I have been a little over-stressed about school, but nothing more than the usual.

I also cannot change my appointment or go in sooner...forgot to mention that.

Stress really affects the way your period is. If under too much it will cause a disruption in your cycle. It could be a number of things like hormone imbalances, uterine fibroids, or other problems. You are just going to have to wait until you have your doctor appointment. Good luck! Hope its not serious.

17 Day Period

You should see a doctor if the two of you decide that this is going to be a problem. I had a friend who was having 20-30 day periods with only a few days in between and painful cramps, so she got on birth control pills. She was 15 then. So, I don't think that its anything serious, but it can be really horrible for a young girl to be on her period for such a long time!

You may have a fibroid cyst which can be taken care of with either medication or laser surgery (outpatient). Make sure your GYN knows you have had your period for 17 days (call them today) because they might be able to get you in there as an emergency appointment. Good luck

I have to say, if I had my period for 17 days I'd be in the ER - it sounds nearly impossible unless you're bleeding internally (not trying to suggest you are - just kind of baffled by the logistics of it!).

I would go see a doctor ASAP, but if you aren't suffering any other ill-effects, I suppose it's not urgent... seeing your doctor in a week should be good enough. If you start feeling weak or any other blood-loss related effects, please go to an ER immediately.

Infection can sometimes cause this kind of bleeding that you are having. I would recommend calling the doctor's office in the a.m. and ask them about a cancellation for this week to have you get in sooner.
