are you sure the smell isn't the cedar itself? ok, so it's the moth ball scent. All of those old cedar chests smell like that, and for good purpose (so to answer your question, there is no way to remove the smell), that cedar and moth balls chase away bugs (critters like cockroaches, spiders, etc.). You're supposed to put your "fine" heirloom items in there (silks, laces, etc.), things that need preserving, private papers (cause there usually is a hidden drawer, and papers over a long time can get eaten by bugs) and sometimes firearms. We used to be proud of that fragrance because it meant you owned something special.

I had to sit next to a woman who smelled like mothballs at the movies once! Horrible smell!

lol...Mothballs remind me of my Nan... It has that distinctive smell you associate with clothing etc that has come out of storage...
Not too sure about the huffing...
