I am doing an essay on ethnic origins and just wondered which is the correct term.

Please don't anyone take this the wrong way, I am not trying to be racist.

I think the term "colored" eventually died out after integration. I would say "black" when you were not sure of their particular origin, ie. Dominican or Namibian.

Do NOT refer to us as "coloured"
That word was used way back in the day, but don't use it now. It is a lot less offensive than using the infamous N-word but we will still raise an eyebrow if we hear you call us "coloured." Black is the correct term to use.

Oh and you could use the term African American but you can only use that if you're talking about American Blacks. Because you know that some Black people have nothing to do with America so calling them American would be stupid. If you're talking about Black people in general then just say Black people.

Listen, we ARE black people and have always been referred to as black people.
I don't know where this coloured people business came from.
Are whites referred to as pale people? So why do some people refer to us as coloured?
We are black, end of story, but i live in the UK so it might be different in America where they call them african americans but it shouldn't be used for all black people because not all of us are americans.

Black people do not care what you call them, as long as you don't call them the "N' word. Black people are so diverse today, they integrated with every race, therefore it is hard to call them Black, because they may not be full Black. The term, African-American is the approperiate word. Black person can be of half White, Asian, etc. It is better to call a White person a Caucasion and not White. It is better to call an Asian an Asian, not Oriental.

I think black would be more appropriate term, although I hate putting a shade on anyone.
