Not quite. There's a certain amount of compression losses and the audio part of an iPod is not exactly hi-fi. Whether you notice the difference depends on your choice in music (the extra distortion probably improves heavy metal) and how fussy you are.

No, not at all.
The iPod is not designed for good sound quality, it is just designed to store lots of music. Hence, sound reproduction from an iPod is very poor, no matter what speakers you use.
If you want decent sound quality, you will need CDs or vinyl and a good quality amplifier and CD player / turntable, plus speakers.
As the old saying goes, "You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear".

it really depends on the power of your speakers, i tested the ipod with my home theater speakers and it surprised me!
