I am college student studying accounting schedule to graduate June 2008 (2 quarters left). Now I just took a P/T job with H&R block do taxes only until April 15th. Now will this look good on my resume for CPA firms? I want to become a CPA and so far i have NO job experience in accounting. In order to become a CPA you need to pass the hard exam and have 2 yrs job experience. Will someone hire me for this? I took a siginificant pay cut (and no benefits) to work for HR Block and now Im nervous whether someone will hire me upon graduation. (I applied at a few local CPA firms for internships and none of them hired me, not even a 2nd interview). Any thoughts?

Accounting firms are desperate to hire right now, so I don't think you need to go way out of your way (other than doing well in school) to get hired. It's an okay job, but doing tax returns isn't tremendously good preparation for auditing. However, you have done it, and I don't think it will hurt you in the job market.

Anyone can work at H&R Block so I will have to say that that is no experinece for an accounting major.

You need to keep applying for internships and check down at your career office at school. Look into the accounting department and ask what to do there has to be something available to earn some experienece. Its tough but you need to exhaust all your options. There is something out there.

Keep trying and talk to everyone you can. Even check the paper for entry level accounting positions. Check online in your area (city, county and state jobs). Some only require that you have just 12 hours of accounting courses to get an entry level job. The pay wont be fantastic but you just want experienece. I am in the same boat because I am pursuing a Masters of Accountancy and need experinece also. Dont worry, something is out there for you.

I think you will be fine, just relax. Work hard at your job at H&R Block (I heard it's a great place to work) and firms will notice you.
