Because, for some people, money means more to them than behaving like a decent human being. When they get caught out, of course they are sorry....for themselves. They weren't sorry while they were getting away with it. This pair put a lot of people through a lot of unnecessary anguish, for what? A measly couple of hundred thousand? In what universe does that replace the love and affection of a family?

She almost did get away with it. If he'd stayed in Panama, they'd still be partying.
I hope you're right about the boys, but some things about the case (eg both of them having recently quit their jobs - one the day before his Dad came out of hiding) just seem odd. One worked in international property, one in insurance - another strange coincidence. Have you thought of the possibility that the parents are taking the whole rap but the boys knew all along?

Don't forget between the news breaking and arrest, there was the rather significant matter of the newspaper exclusives that I saw reported she gave in a hotel in Miami. Now I don't know how much cash was involved, but my bet is that they are betting that he will do a short stretch and she will get a slapped wrist. They then retire with not only the cash, but also the bung from the papers.

Because she is a pathetic weakling ,her and her wet lettuce of a husband are greedy self interested fools ,their behaviour toward their children's feeling has been a disgrace, I hope they throw the book at them .Like you my sympathy is with the sons they have behaved as you say with dignity, a lesson maybe the parents should learn.

If found guilty, she won't be alllowed to retire with the cash 'after a short stretch and a wrist slap'. It is unlawful to benefit from the proceeds of a crime, so these moneys would be recovered.
This event may turn out to be more complex with this family than currently described.

Maybe she was controlled by her husband.
No, you are right, no one forced her to do anything like spend the money etc, but when you are being controlled by your partner you do not have a mind of your own, all semblance to what you once were vanishes.
I dont know of course if this is the case, just pondering the possibility as she said he was "persuasive". Who knows what goes on behind closed doors, and he is a bit of a freak anyway, even his own Dad said so.

Now they will both have to go and paddle their own canoes. However, how will the sons cope with all of this fracas and disruption to their lifes.
The stuff good novels are made of...stuff you could'nt make stories up like this and Nick Gleeson and Barings bank fiasco.

I can understand the motive for faking your own death, getting rich in the process, putting your past behind you, and having the chance to start a new life. To many people, that would be their greatest fantasy (it's the Reggie Perrin, Robert Maxwell,John Stonehouse theory) .
...but to walk into a London police station and give yourself up just as you appear to be home and dry....that to me is the biggest mystery of all.
Why would someone do that?
