They need a playoff badly. There is no doubt about that.
I'm tired of hearing debates every year about who is the best. I want to see it played out. Let the teams decide it themselves.
The more I think about it, the more I agree that a sixteen team playoff might be needed. It might be a little extreme, but I think it's the only fair way to decide a champion.
I do like the idea proposed on Yahoo Sports a while ago. Give the eleven conference champions automatic bids, and then take five at-large teams. Yes, you might get some weaker teams in the mix, but then it's a true playoff system. Every team in the division has a chance to win the national championship.
You don't have to debate who has the strongest schedule or who has the better wins. The teams will play it out and decide it for themselves, and the only time strength of schedule will come into play is when deciding seeds and at-large teams, which is the only time it should come into play.
Look at what the current system has brought. Every year, there's controversy about something.
This year, it's about who belonged in the title game, why Ohio State should go up in the rankings for doing nothing, how LSU jumped above Georgia in the final BCS poll, why Hawaii can't play for the national championship despite being the only undefeated team, and why Missouri was left out of the BCS.
Last year, it was about Michigan not being in the title game and why Wisconsin and Auburn had to be left out of the BCS.
Three years ago, five teams finished the regular season undefeated, while only two got to play for the national title. Three teams finished the season undefeated.
The point is that the BCS has not produced a champion that hasn't had some controversy with one exception. That exception is two years ago, when USC and Texas were 1-2 all season and the only two undefeated teams. That's the only case where there won't be debate over the game, if two BCS teams finish undefeated and at the top of the poll.
Look at college basketball. The only controversy that comes out of that is the teams left out of the tournament but close to making it, and all of those teams left out had plenty of chances to make it during the regular season. There are some people that say the regular season is devalued because of the tournament, but everyone has an equal chance to win, and there is never controversy about who the national champion is.
College football deserves a champion that has proven themselves, not one that is chosen as the best after countless hours of debates. Prove it on the field, not behind desks. That is what college football needs.

I think there should be a mix of the two. A pure playoff system would eliminate most teams from a bowl game, while the pure bowl system has the problems that we all know and hate. I say combine the two and create a playoff system to determine who gets thrown into what bowl game. This would keep the whole BCS bowl game series, throw out junk like the PapaJohns.com Bowl and the Meineke Car Care Bowl, and create something that would make most people happy. The lowest bowls allowed to stay should be ones like the Alamo Bowl and the Sun Bowl.

the current system of choosing who plays is ok. for all the yelling an screaming every year there are really only 2-3 teams worthy for a nat title shot. but i do think they will tweak the Bowls again when the current contract is up in 2011 and the BCS bowls will become a 4 team play-off
1 vs 4
2 vs 3
the winners play in the BCS champ bowl
4 rounds of play-off??? lol way too many undeserving teams sorry but if you finish 16th in the BCS you have 2 or 3 losses and really dont deserve a shot

i'm undecided coaches could get a vote on something...They vote politically. have you ever considered how the coaches very final votes went? Bobby Bowden voted Oklahoma 10th, his son voted them seventh, Mike Belotti from Oregon voted them seventh and Chris Peterson from Boise State voted them seventh and so did Scnellenberger. All yet Chris Peterson voted Mizzou in basic terms before Oklahoma...does this sound independent? No. user-friendly Playoff - Make each convention play a championship interest. The 6 enormous convention winners get in, then the two optimal ranked champions from something of the conferences get in as nicely. Seed the bowls for those 8 communities, have an extremely final 4 the subsequent weekend - on the domicile of the better seed (gotta be some reward for being ranked greater), Then wait each week and have a championship interest at independent internet site.

PLAYOFFS... the only way to determine a champ
-16 team playoff
-11 conf champs
-5 at-large (ND would be an at large)
-current BCS formula can be used to select at-large
-all games (except Final) played @ home school
-Rds 1&2 in early Dec
-Semi & Final after Christmas
-All teams not reaching semis can still play in Bowl Games

Playoffs no doubt. The only way to crown a true champion.
Florida should be defending its championship.Oklahoma and Georgia certainly deserve a shot. L.S.U. is a lot more deserving than Ohio State. At least L.SU. won a conference championship.Buckeyes weak schedule got them there again.Proably to be routed again.
Heck Hawaii deserves more of a shot than them.Sure they had a weak schedule, but at least they run the table.
Bowls have long outlived their time. It is time for playoffs.....

Playoffs like every other sport in the history of sports. Who ever thought of Bowls in the first place? It is just a ridiculous way to decide a national champion.
