When to use italicized words in an essay?

Italisized words are usually when there is particular emphasis on a word. Its used to:

Emphasize a particular word
The only reason she stays is because of the kids. ("only" is ital.)

Stand alone titles: Stephen Kings "It" was a really good book

Titles or ship names "The Pinta", "The Santa Maria"

Foreign words with in a text including scientific names
"Homo sapiens"
Definition or introduction of terms within the text

Defining numbers or stand alone letters in text
The letter h has a straight line with a hook. ("h" would be Ital.)

Sometimes it indicates a characters thought
"I hate this, thought amanda." ("I hate this" would be ital.)

Mathematical expressions such as in physics or algebra
E=mc^2 (the MC would be ital.)

In text citation- taking a segment form another article and inserting it in your own word as a quote

Usually foreign phrases are italicized. However, this one is so well-known that it's almost considered common. To be safe, use italics.
