It's a hold-over tradition. In the days before inexpensive long-distance calls, it was a good way to get back in touch with the people you care about but rarely see. You could also send a current photo of yourself.

Nowadays you can just email or call and it's basically free.

Sending Christmas cards was a way of connecting to others in a world where people weren't nearly as connected as they are today.

Well the difference that i understand is that the cards will be left hanging for a while and the love that is communicated in them may be felt longer than a simple call, as a result. Dont you think? Without mentionning that cards can be good decoration for christmas ;-) And i personally think that even people who dont send them because they dont believe christmas is important in any way WILL appreciate receiving them !

Writing is lasting, and people can really think about what they want to say, rather than just babbling. Furthermore, people are busy at that time of year, and they don't necessarily want to take phone calls from everyone, but the cards let them know that people are thinking of them. Finally, many of the cards I get have pictures of people's families on them, so I can see how people's kids have changed from year to year.

Well there you go, you answered your own question. Christmas cards were invented because the original person couldn't 'call' on everyone he knew to wish them a merry christmas.
But if you have the time and call everyone you know, that's even better because it's more personal!
Merry christmas!

Start a scrapbook for every Christmas. After all, someone spent money on that card. I usually dont save the ones I get from distant family but whatever I get from my parents, my kids, inlaws, or a close friend, I do keep those.

Every day we are talking to people and friends some important and some just to say hi, but those things eventually override and or erased from memory by everyday events overwritten in the memory, the cards can be kept years as a token of love and affection shown by people and friends that's the difference..

If you are able to call all of your family and friends then you are surely keeping with in the holiday spirit ! But cards are nice to open and many people like to use them to decorate.I personally keep them in a scape book to enjoy long after the holidays .

Send cards so that Santa doesnot get angry and paster your sorry little monkey like smelly hairy candy *** through your living room to new moon roof top all way from ur wife's side bedlock area.
Also because you contribute the spending as wages for those who make them to make your sorry mean pathetic, cruel and son of abitch relatives happy for a day.

The point is to let ppl that you only see once in a blue moon know that you were thinking about them and that everything w/ you is alright. It's hard to get used to doing it, but it offers an intrinsic value that just feels good in your heart. Send em out!!! Let em know you care (even if you really don't).

They have taken the time to pick a card and send it to you. Thoughtfulness. Phoning is lazy , cheap and thoughtless.
