What are some cultural differences between the US and Australia?

- we have a sense of humour and we can laugh at ourselves.
- we use the correct English
- we have Christmas on the beach because it is summer here
- we use the metric system
- our kids actually know that there are other countries around the world and actually KNOW where they are and that they are NOT part of the USA.
- We are a very tolerant society and very multicultural. We DO have racist here but as a whole - we don't have any racial tension between different colours and ethnic groups.
- We can actually have arguments about different sport teams we support and still be good friends at the pubs and don' t bash each others' head in.
- we are (still - so far) not too pedantic about being politically correct at every word.
- We don't all own a gun just to "protect ourselves"
- we drive on the left side of the road
- Most schools have uniforms


That will do for now I think
(and yes... some comment may sound like a generalisation but that's up to you Americans to interpret the intent of what was said and take offense ONLY if you want to)

The gap is closing since we are being culturally colonised at a furious rate. Two big differences - USA is far more religious that Australia (30% of Austrlian's have "no religion" compared with 15% for the USA), and in Australia people just don't talk about their religion - it is considered to be a private thing. Seeing US politicians talking about "God" so much is very odd - we tend to think that religion should be kept out of politics. Of course this is a generalisation. Also, Australian women are AMAZAED at how much makeup women from the USA (or at least the ones you see on TV) wear. I'm sure most US women aren't that painfully overgroomed, though, so it's probably just what is shown on TV. Also, the plastic surgery rates are much, much lower than in the US. We have also banned carrying guns. On the positive side for the US, you seem much less tolerant of racism and sexism than us, judging by your laws on discrimination. Yes, the whole planet does hate you, but you invented Jazz music so I for one forgive and forget.
