Yes totally. But most real metal (or of that genre) guitarists recognize his genius as a guitarist and a song writer. This current generation of drop d tuning and seven string guitar wankers probably know nothing of him sadly. His KISS solo album (released September 18, 1978) was basically a prophecy of what metal was to sound like and become in the 80's. I saw Frehley'c Comet in 1987 at Harpo's in Detroit. They rocked the place down!!! His new album will be out next year and he just played the Hard Rock in NYC on Oct 31 for the Eddie Trunk Halloween show. His style and technique is amazing and legendary...many people are still influenced by him even though he hasn't put new music out in awhile. Even the late great Dimebag had Ace tattooed on him. Dime new a good guitarist when he heard one!
ACE IS BACK AND I TOLD YOU SO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, Ace Frehley of KISS fame is really underrated but he doesn't care about that. What he cares about how he entertained the whole KISS Army since 1971. He was a great guitar player but a stupid drunkard but he's now sober. He was a great songwriter, too. I remember idolizing him when I was around 13 years old and that was 1980. I really dig his make-up (Space Ace) and of course, his collection of guitars. He's kinda old right now but he still rocks hard and plays the guitar the way no one is playing today.

Yes he is undrerated. He only underrated because he was a member of KISS. But alot of people do not realize how many musicans Ace has inspired over the decades. For example all you Pantera fans out there Ace Frehley was a huge inspiration for Dimebag. But they do not care because they think Ace and KISS is horrible.

I think it's pretty clear that KISS in general, and Ace Frehley in particular, are completely overrated.
Proof of this can be found in the large catalogue of KISS-related products (from beer coozies to COFFINS) that the band have been flogging for a couple of decades now, and which continue to sell to a massive audience of dudes with mullets who wear tight stone-washed jeans, black leather Harley baseball caps, black t-shirts and gold chains around their necks. The other half of KISS's audience is made up of women who still wear their hair feathered just as they did in their prime (usually around 1976 or so).
Frehley made absolutely NO innovations to modern rock guitar playing, unless you want to count flagrant overuse of double-stops in solos and/or building a wall of fake Marshall stacks out of cardboard for visual effect.
In all fairness, there have been dozens of great bands who have cited KISS as a major influence, but that doesn't really justify their existence. If anything, the number of times (100%) I pick up a guitar magazine and find yet another KISS song in the tablatures section argues strongly against the idea that Frehley is in any way "underrated" and, in fact, suggests exactly the opposite...
Sorry if I'm stepping on any toes here, but in all fairness KISS themselves have always been pretty honest about their ability level and none of them have ever claimed to be exceptional at their instruments. If anything, they're travelling salesmen with guitars, and that's just fine.

Kinda, but I wouldn't say he's a good guitar player. Average, better than all this nonsense out here, but not comparable to many other hard rock/heavy metal guitarists. I guess the kinda would be because he IS from a fairly popular band. A popular person but underrated guitarist is Prince. Popular, but not acknowledged for his guitar skills.

I don't think he's underrated- he was acknowledged pretty highly in his day. But these days, the technical level is light years beyond his abilities. He's a solid, tasty lead guitarist for the genre- and he got lucky, so now he's acknowledged due to his fame... But there are hundreds of thousands of better guitar players in the world- in addition to all the great rock, blues, and metal players, any professional jazz, classical, flamenco, country or studio player. But he's got a cool thing going for sure- one of my faves! However, in my opinion, the best guitarist KISS ever had was Mark St. John, (R.I.P.) who played on Animalize.

KISS was a great rock band. That's pretty much it. What a great gimmick. I love their old stuff. I saw the 24 hour KISSMAS and got that old feeling of many year ago. I don't think Ace is underrated. He's just a simple rocker. Him and Joe Perry. No glitz. Just rock. And they JAM!!!!!
