It's better to provide examples instead of a definition:
Say a wealthy man marries a poor woman...they get divorced, something happens to his money and the ex wife becomes wealthy. Now that he's poor and she's rich...it's ironic.
Say you are in a hurry to get somewhere, and you get stopped at every single stop light or get into an accident that causes you to be late.....that's ironic.
Finally, let's say that there is a 3rd string player for a sport who may get ridiculed or made fun of constantly for being "a loser". All of a sudden, the 1st and 2nd stringers get hurt and the 3rd stringer has to come into the game......and dominates and wins the game for the team. That would be ironic.
Hope that helps!

It's ironic you would ask that question because I was just thinking the same thing! What does ironic mean? A good synonym would be "unbelieveable".

If you listen to the song from Alanis Morrisette called "ironic" you will understand what exactly it means...basically it means that life is a b***h as in you get what you have wanted or needed for a long time but now you don't need it or want it so what was the use. that is just one example I am sure there are many ways to explain this word ....it is an interesting word that is for sure.

funny because of the unusual circumstances or situations. for instance, if a girl yells out "I hate apples!" and yet is eating an apple at an apple convention..that is ironic.
